Guide: Updating the IPA-Suite ENG Version

Recommendation:

The installation can generally be carried out by yourself. However, for a smooth process we recommend having the installation performed by our team or a certified partner.

Note: Support services are chargeable if the installation is carried out by a non-certified person.

Preparations Before the Update

Before the update, all IPA clients – if in use – must be logged off.

1. System Backup

Before release v.9.1.2.21

  • Server backup or snapshot: Create a full backup or snapshot of the server before the update.
  • Database backup of the IPA-Suite MariaDB:
    • Open a CMD window (as administrator).
    • Navigate to the directory: C:\it-scom\ipa-suite\.
    • Run the following command: IPA-SuiteDB-Backup.cmd
The backup and a log file are saved under C:\it-scom\Backup\.

Verifying the backup files:

  • Check that the backup file was saved successfully.
  • Compare the file size of the backup files with the original files:
    • The original files are located under: C:\it-scom\MariaDB\data\ipadb
  • The file sizes of the backup files should match those of the original files.

From release v.9.1.2.21 onwards

  • Server backup or snapshot: Create a full backup or snapshot of the server before the update.
  • Database backup of the IPA-Suite MariaDB: Backup and Restore Guide

2. Backup of the IPA-Server Workflows

  • Open the IPA-Server Admin Tool.
  • Right-click on the root folder.
  • Select the option "Export all configurations now".
  • The backup is saved as multiple .cfg files, with each file corresponding to one workflow.

Verifying the backup files:

  • Make sure that a .cfg file was created for each workflow.
  • Check the storage location of the exported files and verify that all workflows have been fully backed up.

3. System and Service Checks

  • Check the service account of the IPA-Server.
  • Verify the MariaDB service name:
    • The service should be named "IPA-SuiteDB" and run under the user "NT SERVICE\IPA-SuiteDB".
    • If this is not the case, please contact our support team.

4. Note Down the License Key

  • You can find the license key in the IPA-Server Admin Tool under "Version info".

5. Check the System Requirements

System Requirements for the IPA-Suite

Updating the IPA-Suite

1. Download the Latest Release

Download IPA-Suite

2. Install the New Version

  • Install the new IPA-Server version according to the instructions.

3. Replace the License

An update within the same release version (e.g. v.9) does not require a new license. An upgrade from version 8 or older to version 9, however, requires a new license for v.9.

After the installation, request a version 9 license: License Exchange Guide

4. Start the MariaDB Update

Before updating MariaDB, check which MariaDB version is installed on the server. The current version of the IPA-Suite uses MariaDB version 11.8.6.0. If you are using an older version, please follow these steps to update MariaDB.

Warning
IMPORTANT: After the IPA-Suite update

After every IPA-Suite update, the database must be updated. There are two different cases, depending on whether MariaDB needs to be upgraded to a new version or not:

In both cases, first start CMD as administrator:

  • Open CMD as administrator and navigate to the directory: C:\it-scom\ipa-suite\.

Case 1: MariaDB upgrade required (older MariaDB version installed) – the current release is MariaDB 11.8.6.0

Run all three commands one after the other:

  • Run the following command to upgrade MariaDB: DBcfg.exe --UpgradeMariaDB
  • Update the database structure with the following command: DBcfg.exe --upgradeDbStructure "c:\it-scom\MariaDB 11.8.6.0\bin"
  • Update the database with the following command: c:\it-scom\IPA-Suite>DBUpdate.exe --update Note: The path points to the bin directory of the latest MariaDB version.

Case 2: No MariaDB upgrade required

Even if MariaDB is not upgraded to a new version, the database update must be run after every IPA-Suite update.

This command applies all MariaDB patches of our system:

DBUpdate.exe --update

After the Update

Warning
Very important: Open all IPA-Server workflows and save the configuration again.

1. Perform a System Test

Verify that the server is running smoothly.

2. Final Backup

After the successful update, create a new backup of the system. Backup and Restore Guide

With these steps, your IPA-Suite has been successfully updated to the latest version and is fully operational. As the next step, you can update all IPA clients.
